Rhododendron honey is a rare and delicate high-mountain honey produced from a limited harvest in the Pyrenees. It comes from the nectar of the Rhododendron ferrugineum, a wild shrub that blooms at high altitudes in subalpine meadows. With its short flowering season and remote habitat, this monofloral honey is highly prized by those who appreciate subtlety, purity, and craftsmanship.
A pure environment for a pure honey
The ferruginous rhododendron grows between 1,600 and 2,300 meters above sea level. Its bright pink flowers bloom briefly between May and July, attracting bees to unspoiled areas of rich biodiversity. The honey gathered in these wild settings is clean, smooth, and expressive — a true reflection of its mountain origin.

Artisan production with limited availability
At Abellaires Empordanesos, we only produce rhododendron honey when nature allows. We move our hives to remote mountain areas during the short blooming period, and harvest in small batches. The honey is raw, unpasteurized and unfiltered, preserving its full nutritional and aromatic properties.
Properties and benefits
In addition to its unique taste, rhododendron honey is rich in trace minerals such as manganese, potassium, and iron. It has been traditionally associated with soothing, antirheumatic, and digestive benefits. Its lightness makes it ideal for children, athletes, and anyone seeking a natural energy boost. It may also be used externally to tone and soften the skin.
Recommended culinary uses
Rhododendron honey pairs beautifully with plain yogurt, fresh cheese, or dried fruits. It’s excellent for sweetening mild herbal teas such as chamomile or rooibos, and adds an elegant touch to home baking recipes where a soft, floral sweetness is desired.
Storage and crystallization
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. No refrigeration is required. Natural crystallization is a sign of purity and quality: to return the honey to its liquid state, simply warm the jar gently in a bain-marie, without exceeding 40 °C (104 °F).
Our quality commitment
From our family-run workshop in the Empordà region, we offer organic, traceable and truly artisanal honey. We follow sustainable beekeeping practices and work in harmony with the bees and the land. Every jar of honey reflects the care, patience, and respect we put into every step — from hive to home.
Frequently asked questions
Is rhododendron honey safe to eat?
Yes. While some rhododendron varieties in other parts of the world may contain natural toxins, our Pyrenean rhododendron honey is completely safe and tested to meet quality standards. It contains no additives or artificial substances.
How is it different from other mountain honeys?
Rhododendron honey is lighter, sweeter and more floral than darker mountain honeys like heather or chestnut. Its smooth texture and subtle aroma make it perfect for those who prefer a delicate and refined flavor.
Can it be applied to the skin?
Yes. Due to its natural enzymes and trace minerals, rhododendron honey can be used as a natural skin treatment. It helps tone, moisturize, and soothe sensitive or irritated skin.
